Boss told me I had to clock out any time I left the till… so I did, every single time

I used to work retail for a manager who thought "customer service" meant chaining me to the register.
  • 03
One day he tells me I've been leaving the till too often. By "too often" he meant: grabbing change from the safe,
  • 04
getting a roll of bags, even walking five feet to throw out trash.
  • 05
His new rule: *"If you step away from the register, even for a second, you must clock out."*Alright then.
  • 06
Next shift, I took him literally. At 9:10 AM, a customer drops jar that smashes near the counter. a
  • 07
I clock out, grab the paper towels, clean it, clock back in at 9:16.
  • 08
9:40, receipt printer jams. Clock out, walk three feet to maintenance, get the roll, clock back in at 9:47.
  • 09
10:05, customer wants coins for the parking meter. Clock out, walk to the safe, get change, clock back in at 10:13.
  • 10
10:42, I need to grab a bag of quarters for the till. Clock out, 20 steps to the office, clock back in at 10:50.
  • 11
11:15, someone asks me to check if we have larger bags. Clock out, grab them from literally the shelf behind me,
  • 12
    clock back in at 11:18.

By the end of the day my timecard showed I'd left work thirteen times.
  • 15
It added up to nearly two hours of unpaid breaks all for basic stuff | was supposed to do.
  • 16
Payroll flagged it, HR called me in, and I showed them the email from my boss laying out the rule in black and white.
  • 17
Next thing I know, he's the one being chewed out.
  • 18
The rule vanished overnight, and magically we were trusted to use common sense again.

Perky214 I'd just have never left the register - I'm sorry, I can't get change for you because if I do I have to clock out, and I won't get paid for that work task. Perhaps <manager> can help you?
  • 20
That makes these non- register customer service tasks 100% his problem, while you give excellent customer service at the register.
  • 21
CommercialAlarming 13 OP The best part was the look on his face every time I announced, 'Clocking out!' just to grab tape or change. I think he regretted that rule on day one.

Locallnactivist Clock out to do work? That's wage theft. Your boss broke the law and exposed the company to a lawsuit.
  • 23
Myte342 That's not unpaid breaks, that's unpaid work. You performed work tasks off the clock that you are supposed to be paid to do.
